U.S. News & World Report Names Jewish Home of Rochester Among Best in New York

(November 16, 2022 – ROCHESTER, NY) The Jewish Home of Rochester, an affiliate of Jewish Home, has been recognized for excellence as a Best Nursing Home for a fifth year by U.S. News & World Report. Both Long-Term Care and Short-Term Rehabilitation received ratings at the highest level for 2022-2023. Only 16% of skilled nursing facilities nationwide earned this distinction. The Jewish Home is one of only 38 out of 611 nursing homes in New York State to receive an overall rating of five out of five. “The Jewish Home has always been committed to providing quality care the way we would care for our own families,” said Michele Schirano, RN, Administrator of the Jewish Home of Rochester. “We are honored to be recognized for these efforts with this award.”

Short-term rehabilitation at the Jewish Home rated higher than other facilities across New York State and the U.S. in several performance measures, including:

  • Patient discharge to home
  • Patient visits to the emergency room
  • Infection prevention

Long-term care at the Jewish Home also outperformed nursing homes state- and nation-wide in the following quality measures:

  • The number of hospitalizations per 1000 patient days
  • The number of emergency room visits per 1000 patient days
  • Sustained self-care
  • Vaccination rates

For 2022-2023, U.S. News rated more than 15,000 nursing homes on care, safety, infection rates, staffing and health inspections. The Best Nursing Homes methodology factors data such as resident care, safety, and outcomes. To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, U.S. News evaluated each nursing home’s performance using a variety of data obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Both short- and long-term ratings include data on consistency of registered nurse staffing, use of antipsychotic drugs, and success in preventing ER and hospital visits. The long-term care rating also measures how well they were staffed on weekends, while the short-term rehabilitation rating includes measures of success in preventing falls, preventing serious infections, and ensuring residents are able to return home.

The annual Best Nursing Homes ratings, now in its 13th year, assist prospective residents and their families in making informed decisions in consultation with their medical professionals about where to receive short-term and long-term nursing home care.
