Jewish Home’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Hosts Parkinson’s Education Event

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Jewish Home’s Atkin Center for Outpatient Rehabilitation recently hosted Surviving and Thriving with Parkinson’s, a community event featuring local neurology specialist Dr. Michelle Burack. Dr. Burack shared the latest in what’s happening with Parkinson’s disease research and spoke about the power of body and mind connection.

The event offered both a medical and personal perspective for those with Parkinson’s and their family members. A question and answer segment, led by Chad Mapes, Atkin Center Director, featured a panel of experts including Jewish Home staff, Patricia Nealon from Parkinson’s Foundation Greater Rochester, and Dr. Burack. The panel answered guest questions and discussed special programs and therapies for Parkinson’s patients, such as LSVT Big & Loud and Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT).

Guests were also given the opportunity to watch a private showing of “Yvonne’s Kitchen”, a short film that takes a personal look at a day in the life of Yvonne Hylton, from Rochester, who has Parkinson’s disease. Yvonne and her husband were in attendance at the event and she participated in the question and answer panel. Guests were able to hear first-hand how Parkinson’s has impacted her life, and how she deals with changes caused by the disease.
